About the artist
Stanford Slutsky (born 1941, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American contemporary artist renowned for his oversized, hyper-realistic sculptures of iconic foods. With a practice spanning several decades, Slutsky transforms the familiar forms of sweets, snacks, and celebratory treats into exuberant, larger-than-life artworks that tap into nostalgia, desire, and the universal joy of indulgence.
Slutsky’s sculptures begin with a ritual: he must first taste and examine the real food. Only then does he begin the labor-intensive process of building, sculpting, sanding, and hand-painting each piece to an exacting finish. Working with mixed media, layered coatings, and richly textured surfaces, Slutsky creates works that are irresistible to the senses.
For Slutsky, food is far more than a subject: it is a symbol of community, celebration, and childhood wonder. His sculptures reawaken the impulse to taste, touch, and delight in life’s simple pleasures. By magnifying candies, pastries, and comfort foods, he invites viewers to reconnect with the emotions tied to sweetness, satiation, and memory. His works speak to the “inner youth” in all of us.
Slutsky has exhibited in numerous national and international competitions, museums, and gallery venues throughout his career. He has participated in the Boca Raton Museum of Art’s 54th Annual All Florida Juried Exhibition, and in 2016, his sculpture Assorted Candy won first prize at The Armory in West Palm Beach. His work has been showcased at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, the Nathan D. Rosen Museum, and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, among other institutions.
His sculptures have also been featured at multiple Art Basel–adjacent fairs in Miami including Art Miami, CONTEXT Art Miami, and Aqua Art Miami, often exhibited by several international galleries simultaneously. Slutsky’s work has reached a global audience through widespread press coverage, including interviews on CNN.
Slutsky’s sculptures bring energy, humor, and irresistibly bold presence to contemporary collections. Their meticulous craftsmanship, vibrant color, and emotional resonance make them ideal statement pieces for both private homes and public spaces.
