About the artist

Rainer Lagemann (born 1959, Düsseldorf, Germany) is an internationally recognized sculptor celebrated for his architectural, grid-based representations of the human form. He studied Design and Architecture at FH Lippe University in Detmold, Germany, before relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988, where he established a successful high-end furniture gallery specializing in modern European design. After two decades immersed in the world of contemporary aesthetics and artisan craftsmanship, Lagemann sold his share of the business in 2007 to dedicate himself fully to sculpture, his lifelong passion.

Lagemann’s work centers on the human body in motion, one of the most enduring themes in art history. Using welded hollow metal squares as his primary medium, he constructs dynamic, three-dimensional figures that evoke both the strength and fragility of the human experience. These geometric “cells” form bodies frozen in mid-gesture, leaping, reclining, climbing, stretching, recalling the suspended athleticism of iconic dancers such as Nureyev and Baryshnikov.

Each metal square symbolizes a facet of human existence: the four corners representing intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions. Through this modular structure, Lagemann strips away surface detail to reveal an essential and universal form. His sculptures exist in a space between solidity and openness, where abstraction intersects with classical figuration, and where shadow becomes an extension of the work itself. As light passes through the grid, the sculpture projects a secondary “figure” onto surrounding surfaces, creating an ever-changing interplay between mass, void, light, and motion.

Lagemann has exhibited his sculptures extensively throughout the United States, and his works are included in major public and private collections. Permanent installations include The Kreeger Museum in Washington, D.C., The Baker Museum in Naples, Florida, Harvard University’s iLab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. His sculptures have also been collected by notable figures, including comedian and actor Kevin Hart.
