ABOUT THE ARTIST
Paul Rousso (b. 1958, Charlotte, North Carolina) is a globally recognized American visual artist whose boundary-pushing works fuse pop art, conceptual innovation, and sculptural technique. A graduate of the California College of the Arts, Rousso has become celebrated for transforming everyday ephemera—currency, magazines, newspapers, candy wrappers—into monumental, three-dimensional wall sculptures through his signature concept of “Flat Depth.”
Rousso coined the term “Flat Depth” early in his career: his mission is to render flat, printed objects into volumetric, immersive sculptures—or conversely, to collapse three-dimensional objects into a two-dimensional form. His process is technically rigorous and conceptually complex, incorporating high-resolution scanning, digital retouching, large-format vinyl printing, heat-infused plexiglass, sculpting, welding, and blow-torch finishing. The result: hyperreal, oversized pieces that make banal, disposable artifacts impossible to ignore.
Rousso draws both from classical training and contemporary culture. His early career included designing Robert De Niro’s Tribeca loft, working as a Hollywood scenic artist, and serving as an art director in advertising (notably at Grey Advertising on accounts such as Revlon). These formative experiences inform the ironic, socially aware commentary in his work.
Rousso is deeply influenced by both Pop Art and classical aesthetics. His work reflects on the human condition, consumerism, memory, and the ephemeral nature of printed culture. Rousso’s work is held in prominent private collections around the world including the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Steve Carell and Paul Feig. He has exhibited widely in galleries, art fairs and public institutions in Miami, New York, Amsterdam, Canada and you can find his pieces in the Family Dollar Stores franchise, National Gypsum, Randstad, and more.
