About the artist
Padina Bondar is a multidisciplinary artist whose work merges painting, textile innovation, and environmental commentary through a distinctly contemporary lens. Her practice explores themes of excess, value, and cultural symbolism, transforming familiar imagery into layered visual narratives that challenge traditional ideas of luxury and power.
Her recent painting series, The Killer POP Bunnies, draws inspiration from 13th- and 14th-century medieval manuscript marginalia, where rebellious “killer rabbits” appeared in the margins of religious texts as satirical symbols overturning authority and social hierarchy. Bondar reimagines these figures as the central protagonists of her work, bold, mischievous, and unexpectedly confrontational. Through richly textured mixed media compositions incorporating acrylic, textiles, paper, and reclaimed materials, the rabbits become contemporary emblems of resistance, humor, and critique.
In the series, playful imagery is juxtaposed with deeper commentary on environmental instability, political spectacle, and consumer excess. Weapons are replaced with oversized lollipops, ice cream cones, and candy, acting as symbols of indulgence and distraction that expose the performative nature of modern power structures. This tension between sweetness and satire creates works that are visually seductive yet conceptually sharp, inviting viewers to question what is celebrated, consumed, and ultimately valued.
Bondar’s background in sustainable textile design remains central to her artistic language. Known for transforming discarded plastics and found materials into couture-level works, she carries this same philosophy into her paintings, where materiality becomes both medium and message. Her work redefines contemporary luxury through craftsmanship rather than consumption, proving that beauty and environmental consciousness can exist in the same space.
