ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nelson De La Nuez is one of the world’s most collected and recognizable pop artists, celebrated for his sharp wit, cultural critique, and iconic visual vocabulary. Born in Cuba and raised in California, De La Nuez absorbed American pop culture with the fresh perspective of an outsider, a duality that remains central to his art. His work pairs nostalgia with satire, merging symbols of luxury, consumerism, Americana, and childhood memory into images that are both playful and incisive. This balance of cynicism and sentimentality has made his work accessible, thought-provoking, and enduringly popular.
De La Nuez emerged in the early 1980s with a bold pop-culture-forward style featuring Monopoly imagery, vintage board games, pin-ups, Chanel motifs, retro advertising, and glamorous lifestyle references. While rooted in Pop Art’s legacy, he expanded the genre into something distinctly his own. His trademarked technique, “Art on the Edge,” features fully painted sides on canvas and wood, creating multidimensional works that extend beyond the traditional picture plane. He is listed among the “Who’s Who of the Most Collected Artists of Our Time,” and his pieces are known for their originality, humor, and visual impact.
His artwork appears in prominent private collections of major celebrities, directors, comedians, and industry leaders, and has been acquired for Sotheby’s auctions. De La Nuez’s work has been featured across countless television programs, including MTV Cribs, The Fabulous Life Of, Inside Edition, HGTV shows, multiple Bravo series, TMZ: Michael Jackson’s Final Art Purchase, and America’s Next Top Model.
He was the official 70th Anniversary artist for The Wizard of Oz, creating commemorative artworks including Ditching Dorothy, later immortalized on a limited-edition U.S. postage stamp. His pieces routinely sell out at major international art fairs such as Art Basel Miami, Art Hamptons, Art Southampton, Art Aspen, Art Singapore, and Art Houston. Beyond fine art, De La Nuez has built a luxury design presence with branded home and fashion products sold at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, and Nordstrom. Corporate and celebrity collectors include Delta Airlines (which holds his work in private lounges), Hermes, and Kim Kardashian’s ShoeDazzle. Among his many admirers are Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Warren, and Kelly Clarkson.
