ABOUT THE ARTIST

Thierry Guetta (born 1966, Garges-lès-Gonesse, France) is a French-American contemporary artist known globally under the moniker Mr. Brainwash. Born to a Tunisian family and raised in France, Guetta immigrated to Los Angeles as a teenager, where he worked in fashion, vintage retail, and video production. During this period, he became fascinated by the rise of street art and began obsessively filming graffiti artists, capturing their nocturnal processes, their improvisational culture, and the emerging language of urban art.

Guetta’s trajectory changed dramatically in the mid-2000s when he met Banksy. Encouraged by Banksy to stop filming others and create his own art, Guetta adopted the pseudonym “Mr. Brainwash” and reinvented himself as a pop-street artist. His debut solo exhibition, Life Is Beautiful (2008), held in a repurposed Los Angeles TV studio, became a landmark event. Featuring monumental sculptures, large-scale paintings, and immersive multimedia installations, the show drew thousands of visitors and is widely considered one of the most heavily attended private art exhibitions in contemporary art history.

His meteoric rise gained further international attention with Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, in which Guetta’s transformation from documentarian to art-world phenomenon became central to the film’s narrative. The documentary introduced Mr. Brainwash to an even broader audience and catalyzed his reputation as both a cultural curiosity and a breakout figure in the pop-street art movement.

Mr. Brainwash’s work blends graffiti, stenciling, silkscreen, printmaking, painting, and sculpture through a bold visual vocabulary that merges pop-art iconography with urban sensibility. Juxtaposing classic cultural images, historic figures, cartoons, celebrities, and exuberant slogans, his works pulse with humor, nostalgia, satire, and unabashed optimism. Signature motifs include his “Life Is Beautiful” signage and large-scale reinterpretations of pop-culture archetypes, as well as new recurring imagery such as the Beautiful Girl series (2023–2025) and sculptural works that transform everyday or luxury objects into pop-infused statements.

Guetta has collaborated with numerous cultural and commercial giants, creating album covers for Madonna, Michael Jackson (posthumously), Rick Ross, and Kygo; designing campaigns with Coca-Cola, Marvel Comics, and Hublot; and producing automotive sculptures including a custom-painted 1973 Porsche featured at the Petersen Automotive Museum. His collectors include a wide range of celebrities and public figures, among them Barack and Michelle Obama, Madonna, and David and Victoria Beckham.

In 2022, Guetta opened the Mr. Brainwash Museum in Beverly Hills, which is an immersive, maximalist environment dedicated to his sculptures, installations, and signature pop works. The museum serves as an extension of his ethos: that art is experience and that “Life Is Beautiful” remains a mantra for creativity and human connection.

Mr. Brainwash’s rise has been both influential and controversial. His rapid ascent, heavy use of appropriation, and Banksy adjacency have led some critics to question authorship, originality, or longevity. Yet his cultural impact is undeniable: he helped bridge the worlds of graffiti, pop art, celebrity culture, and mass media, leaving a resonant mark on 21st-century visual culture.
