About the artist
Marc Sijan (born 1946 in Serbia; raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is one of the foremost figures in contemporary hyperrealist sculpture, internationally recognized for his incredibly lifelike depictions of everyday people. His fiberglass and resin sculptures are crafted with meticulous anatomical observation, multi-layered painting, and forensic attention to texture, transforming ordinary figures into profound meditations on humanity, vulnerability, and presence.
Sijan earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he studied anatomy to refine the precision of his sculptural work. Early recognition came when the Milwaukee Art Museum included his sculpture in the permanent exhibition accompanying the work of his mentor, Duane Hanson. Unlike Hanson, whose figures often referenced social critiques, Sijan’s approach focuses on intimacy, humility, and psychological realism.
His sculptures undergo a highly laborious creation process: live models are cast, surfaces are refined over months, and up to 50 layers of paint and sealant are applied to replicate pores, veins, hair, shadow, and the delicate nuances of real skin. The result is startling: viewers often mistake his figures for actual people until they step uncomfortably close, a tension Sijan intentionally cultivates.
Sijan’s work has been exhibited in over 200 museum exhibitions worldwide, making him one of the most widely shown hyperrealist sculptors of his generation. His sculptures are included in hundreds of private, public, and institutional collections across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
