Marc Quinn (born 1964, London, England) is a globally recognized contemporary British artist whose multidisciplinary practice examines the human body, identity, nature, and the psychological forces that shape modern existence. A central figure of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement of the 1990s, alongside contemporaries such as Damien Hirst, Quinn became known for pushing the boundaries of what contemporary art could express, confronting viewers with materials and concepts rarely seen in the medium before.
Quinn graduated from Cambridge University in 1985 and rose to prominence shortly thereafter with his groundbreaking 1991 sculpture Self, an iconic cast of his own head made entirely from frozen blood. Self instantly positioned him as one of the most daring artists of his generation and remains among the most discussed works of contemporary sculpture. Throughout his career, Quinn has continued to experiment with form and material. From marble, gold, and flowers to DNA, frozen flora, and biological matter, Quinn teases out themes of beauty, impermanence, desire, transformation, and the fragile relationship between humans and nature.
His celebrated installation Garden (2000), a frozen botanical landscape preserved at subzero temperatures and displayed at Fondazione Prada in Milan, further solidified Quinn’s reputation for merging conceptual innovation with emotional and visceral impact. His practice spans sculpture, painting, drawing, and monumental public works across the world, including major commissions presented from Singapore and Oslo to London. In 2020, he created a bronze sculpture of protester Jen Reid for the Black Lives Matter movement, installed on the empty plinth where the statue of Edward Colston once stood in Bristol, an act that sparked international dialogue on public art and activism.
