ABOUT THE ARTIST
Juro Kralik (born 1963, Bratislava) is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist whose practice spans sculpture, photography, drawing, and conceptual mixed media. Raised in the sculpting studio of his father in former Czechoslovakia, Kralik’s earliest experiences shaped a lifelong engagement with materials, form, and the narratives embedded in everyday objects. He formally studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Bratislava from 1978 to 1982, later graduating from the Academy of Musician Arts in Prague in 1988. Early in his career, he worked as a freelance photographer and served as President of the Union of Slovak Professional Photographers while developing his own visual language across several media.
A pivotal moment in Kralik’s artistic evolution occurred in the early 1990s when Slovakia transitioned to the Euro. As the former Slovak currency was phased out, Kralik acquired large quantities of the obsolete coins before they were melted down. He began repurposing them as textural, structural, and symbolic elements that transformed these abandoned objects into sculptural compositions that honored the “life” and history of each coin. This concept expanded to British and other European currencies before culminating in his creation of an entirely symbolic unit, the “One Juro,” which allowed him to explore value, meaning, and collective memory independent of national systems.
Kralik’s currency-based wall sculptures merge geometry, rhythm, color, and tactile repetition into visually striking works that carry both conceptual density and aesthetic refinement. His inventive approach has led to exhibitions across more than a dozen solo shows and over one hundred group exhibitions worldwide. Notably, his recent work, exhibited at galleries including Marciano Contemporary in Paris, has attracted significant attention from collectors throughout Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia.
Among his most internationally recognized projects is Art Grand Slam, a unique collaboration with tennis icon Martina Navratilova. Together, they produced over 300 artworks on Grand Slam courts in New York, London, Melbourne, and Paris, blending painting, sport, and live performance into a global artistic endeavor.
Kralik currently divides his time between London and Bratislava and was recently appointed Director General of the Slovak National Gallery, affirming his influence not only as an artist but as a cultural leader. His practice continues to push the boundaries of material transformation, value perception, and interdisciplinary creation.
