About the artist

Julio Le Parc (born 1928 in Mendoza, Argentina) is a seminal figure in Kinetic Art and Op Art, celebrated for his decades-long exploration of movement, light, and viewer perception. One of the most influential experimental artists of the 20th century, Le Parc has lived and worked in Paris since the late 1950s, where he became a central voice in redefining the relationship between artist, artwork, and audience.

Le Parc studied at the School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, where he first questioned traditional artistic authorship and visual hierarchy. After moving to France in 1958, he co-founded the acclaimed Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) alongside Francisco Sobrino, François Morellet, Yvaral (Jean-Pierre Vasarely), and others. GRAV, active during the 1960s, championed collective authorship and participatory art, creating interactive “Labyrinth” environments that immersed viewers in mechanical light, optical vibration, and shifting visual perception.

During this period, Le Parc developed his first suspended mobiles using small Plexiglass elements that scattered light and moved subtly with air currents. His early innovations in optical instability and kinetic movement quickly established him as one of the leading Op Art voices of his generation. In 1966 he received the Grand Prize for Painting at the 33rd Venice Biennale, a landmark achievement that solidified his international reputation.

Though he was less publicly active in the 1970s, Le Parc continued refining several of his most important series, including Modulations, Torsions, and Alchemy, each pushing his research into rhythm, fragmentation, and the psychological effects of light. Over the decades he has exhibited widely across Europe and Latin America, including major solo exhibitions at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2013), Casa Daros in Rio de Janeiro (2014), and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA, 2014). Today, Le Parc is recognized as one of the most influential figures in the global history of perceptual and kinetic experimentation.
