ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was a groundbreaking American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, born in Brooklyn, New York. A self-taught painter, Basquiat first gained attention in the late 1970s as part of the downtown New York graffiti scene under the pseudonym SAMO, known for his cryptic and poetic street messages. His work evolved into a powerful fusion of text, symbols, abstraction, and raw figuration, often confronting themes of race, identity, power, and the inequalities of modern society.
Rising to prominence in the 1980s art world, Basquiat became one of the youngest artists to exhibit at major galleries and collaborated with icons like Andy Warhol. Despite his brief life, his expressive and socially charged paintings redefined contemporary art and gave voice to marginalized perspectives within a predominantly white art establishment.
Today, Basquiat’s legacy endures as one of the most influential forces in modern art—his work continues to inspire new generations of artists, musicians, and designers, and his paintings command some of the highest prices ever achieved for an American artist.
