About the artist
Enoc Pérez (b. San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a contemporary painter celebrated for his vibrant, gestural depictions of modernist architecture. Now based in New York City, Pérez has spent over two decades exploring the relationship between memory, glamour, and the built environment, particularly the iconic structures that shape cultural identity in major cities.
Pérez earned his BFA from the Pratt Institute and later completed his MFA at Hunter College, both in New York. Immersed in the architectural landscape of Manhattan, he began painting buildings such as the United Nations Headquarters, the Seagram Building, and Lever House. These structures became recurring subjects in his practice, not as literal renderings but as symbolic vessels, expressing ideas of idealism, power, nostalgia, and utopian desire.
Working with oil stick, paint, and a distinctive transfer technique, Pérez creates luminous surfaces that echo the warmth of aged photographs and the immediacy of hand-drawn markmaking. His paintings often begin with a series of monochromatic underdrawings produced through image transfer, over which he layers expressive, saturated color. The result is a unique blend of precision and spontaneity: modernist elegance softened through human touch.
His approach draws inspiration from Pop Art, Caribbean color palettes, and the architectural heritage of mid-century masters like Mies van der Rohe and Oscar Niemeyer. Yet Pérez’s voice is unmistakably contemporary; he balances abstraction and representation in works that feel both documentary and dreamlike. He has described architecture as “ready-mades in the Duchampian sense,” responding to buildings not only visually but emotionally.
Pérez’s work has been exhibited in solo and group shows internationally since 1993, and his paintings are included in prominent museum collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia), and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.). His distinct, contemporary reimagining of classic architectural icons has garnered a devoted collector base worldwide.
