About the artist
Jonathan Paul (b. 1975), better known by his pseudonym Desire Obtain Cherish (DOC), is a provocative contemporary artist whose work interrogates modern obsessions with drugs, gender, luxury, media, and fame. Emerging in the early 2000s as a street artist before transitioning into high-concept, high-finish sculptural art, DOC combines influences from street art, pop, conceptual art, and appropriation. His signature cast-resin works are sleek, seductive, and satirical, transforming status symbols into biting commentaries on consumerism and cultural desire.
With early inspiration drawn from a stint in advertising, DOC honed a deep understanding of consumer psychology and communication, themes that ripple through his work. His breakout series, Designer Drugs (2013), repackages luxury-brand logos into faux-pharmaceutical packaging, critiquing the conflation of brand loyalty and addiction. Another well-known body, Heresy’s Cross (2013), features crucifixes formed from melting chocolate bars. This acted as a bold commentary on modern worship and cultural craving.
DOC’s first solo show took place in Los Angeles in 2011, and he has since established a robust international presence with galleries, museums, and fairs. Notable solo exhibitions include Another Useless Artist (2014) and Servant To Infinite Distraction (2016) at UNIX Gallery in New York. He also participated in an installation during the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale (2015), a milestone that underscored his international resonance.
DOC’s work commands serious attention in the art market. Realized prices for his work between 2013 and today range from modest pieces to a record high of $34,573 for Marilyn Crown (sold in 2020 at Ravenel, Taipei).
Critically, DOC’s voice has been praised for its incisive yet alluring commentary on modern culture. As the New Yorker critic Benjamin Genocchio observed: DOC’s work may “cut to the bone,” but is “not malicious,” rather, it operates as a kind of social conscience, wrapping uncomfortable truths in seductive forms.
