ABOUT THE ARTIST

Campbell La Pun (born 1983) is a New Zealand–born, Australia–raised, Japan-based stencil pop artist whose work bridges pop art, street culture, and global advertising. After earning a BA in Media Arts from RMIT University in Melbourne, La Pun relocated to Japan, where Tokyo’s neon-drenched streets and constant visual stimulation profoundly shaped his artistic identity. His practice sits at the intersection of East and West, merging the graphic punch of Western pop art with the hyper-stylized aesthetics of contemporary Japanese culture.

Working with meticulously hand-cut stencils, spray paint, and acrylic on wood or canvas, La Pun reimagines the iconography of modern visual culture: luxury branding, global advertising, celebrity imagery, and pop-cultural symbols. His signature spray-can compositions have become particularly celebrated, drawing a conceptual parallel to Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. By repeatedly returning to the simple, familiar form of the spray can, La Pun explores its seemingly endless design possibilities where each work becomes both an homage to the medium and a commentary on consumerism, repetition, and contemporary image-making.

Beyond the spray cans, La Pun’s stencil paintings depict recognizable icons such as the Mona Lisa, Muhammad Ali, and elite wine and liquor labels. His process is painstaking and technical: each multi-layered work requires two to three weeks to complete. He designs and cuts every stencil by hand, layering color and text with precision to recreate logos, labels, typography, and surface textures. His ability to reinterpret luxury branding has led to collaborations and commissions with global names including Dom Pérignon and Bombay Sapphire, and select high-end clients across the fashion and spirits industries.

La Pun’s art has achieved international recognition, with exhibitions across four continents and collectors ranging from pop stars Kylie Jenner and Mel B to luxury brands like Moët Hennessy. His work is represented by galleries in major cultural centers including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, reflecting his broad appeal across luxury, street, and contemporary art markets.
