ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bisco Smith (b. 1980, Brooklyn, New York) is a contemporary urban artist whose work merges graffiti deconstruction, abstract gesturalism, action painting, and the raw energy of Hip Hop culture. Currently based in Queens, New York, Smith creates dynamic paintings defined by expressive brushstrokes, rhythmic movement, and the visual translation of sound. Working primarily in black and white, his compositions pulse with immediacy, capturing the momentum, cadence, and emotional weight of the moment.
Growing up near New York City in the 1990s, Bisco was deeply influenced by Hip Hop, graffiti, DJ culture, and the visual language of urban environments. He originally rose to prominence under the pseudonym Bisc1, writing graffiti, releasing music, DJing, and touring nationally as both a musician and visual artist. His multidisciplinary background continues to shape the duality of his practice where art is both movement and meditation, and where sound becomes mark, rhythm, and flow.
In 2002, Bisco earned a BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute. He went on to run his own creative studio, collaborating with record labels, musicians, brands, and live event productions before ultimately shifting his full focus to fine art. His belief is simple yet central to his practice: art is energy transmitted, and the artist is the conduit.
In 2011, Smith helped establish WNDO, an influential arts space and residency program in Venice Beach, which continues to foster creative experimentation. Over the years, he has dedicated himself to mentorship and community engagement, leading youth workshops and mural projects around the world. His public works can be found internationally, reflecting his commitment to accessibility, collaboration, and the shared experience of art.
Bisco Smith’s paintings, murals, and installations have been exhibited globally and collected by a wide range of national and international collectors. He has partnered with numerous creative brands, performed at major cultural events, and showcased his work in prominent markets across the United States, Europe, and Asia. His visual language (equal parts intuitive, musical, and architectural) has positioned him as a top voice in contemporary urban abstraction.
