Arcadia by Stev’nn Hall

DTR Modern Galleries welcomes the spring bloom in Boston with an opening reception for acclaimed landscape painter Stev’nn Hall’s newest, dreamlike collection, Arcadia, on April 24th!

Mixed media extraordinaire Stev’nn Hall draws on the meaning of Arcadia — “an idealized, pastoral paradise representing rustic innocence, harmony with nature, and simple quiet pleasure.” The word originates from a mountainous Greek region, becoming a central theme in literature and art as an “unspoiled, utopian wilderness inhabited by sherpherds.”

Hall presents this new body of work as a meditation on peace; each work offers an Eden-like escape from the complexities of modern life. Each painting reflects his signature style, which fuses photography with oil, ink and pastel to create vibrant and sometimes moody dreamscapes.

All pieces are available for purchase and will ship after the exhibition.

Stev’nn Hall (born 1966 in Ontario, Canada) is a mixed-media visual artist known for his emotionally charged, dreamlike landscapes that merge photography, painting, and drawing into richly layered atmospheric works. Raised in rural Ontario, Hall grew up with a 35mm camera in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, an early duality that would eventually define his artistic voice. He studied film, photography, and painting at Concordia University in Montréal, and later channeled his talents into filmmaking, directing indie music videos, and producing award-winning television promos before returning to his first love: painting.

Hall’s process is deeply tactile and rooted in memory. He begins with his own analog photographs, of farmhouses, open roads, vast skies, and pastoral scenes reminiscent of his upbringing, which he reworks through a multi-step transformation. He re-photographs these images through textured glass, crops and overlaps them, and then enlarges them onto birch panels. Over these photographic foundations, he builds layers of oil, acrylic, pastel, and ink. He scrapes, scumbles, scratches, glazes, and repaints the surfaces to create the feeling of aged, time-worn photographs, artifacts shaped by recollection as much as by reality.

The resulting landscapes feel cinematic yet intimate, radiating both nostalgia and quiet melancholy. Hall’s dramatic skies and luminous horizons evoke what he describes as a “connection to the unknown,” an internal pilgrimage shaped by childhood memory and later life experiences, including the complexities of caring for his parents. His work captures the tension between beauty and impermanence.

Stev’nn Hall has exhibited widely across North America and internationally. He has held solo shows in Ontario, Toronto, and Montréal, as well as in DTR Modern Galleries’ locations in the United States. His work resides in private collections worldwide and is included in notable public collections such as The Ritz-Carlton Toronto and the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls. Hall has also been featured on Bravo TV and appeared twice on the artist-focused series Star Portraits.
