ABOUT THE ARTIST
Simone Rosenbauer is a German-Australian contemporary photographer celebrated for her poetic examinations of memory, identity, climate, and the emotional connections that shape the human experience. Currently living and working on Awabakal and Worimi land in Newcastle, Australia, Rosenbauer creates work defined by its sensitivity to time, fragility, and the shifting landscapes, both internal and external, that we inhabit.
Rosenbauer studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany, earning her BA and MA in 2006. In 2008, she was awarded the prestigious European Endeavour Award from the Australian Government, which enabled her to pursue an MFA at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. This transcontinental merging of influences from European conceptualism, Australian light and landscape, became foundational to her voice as an artist.
Her photography explores the quiet intersections between people, place, and environment. Whether capturing sun-softened childhood objects, frozen pools of melting ice, or the subtle weathering of landscapes, Rosenbauer’s images meditate on impermanence and resilience. Her work often functions as an emotional and environmental archive, documenting how memory shifts over time and how the natural world reflects those changes back to us. Through stillness, abstraction, and luminous color, she creates images that feel both documentary and dreamlike.
Simone Rosenbauer’s photography has been exhibited widely across Australia, the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa, including presentations at Aperture Gallery (New York), Paris Photo, Expo Chicago, AIPAD (New York), Les Rencontres d’Arles (France), Musée d’Elysée (Switzerland), PhotoSpring Beijing, and Art Miami. Her work has been featured in major museum contexts and international photography festivals, earning numerous awards throughout her career.
In 2024, she was named a Finalist for the Mullins Conceptual Photography Prize and received the Dobell Exhibition Grant from Museums & Galleries NSW, further affirming her significance in contemporary photographic discourse. Her work is held in major public and private collections worldwide. Rosenbauer’s work offers collectors a rare blend of conceptual depth, visual serenity, and environmental resonance. Her photographs appeal to those drawn to contemporary art that is both introspective and globally relevant, addressing themes of memory, climate, and impermanence through visually striking yet contemplative imagery. With strong institutional support and increasing international visibility, her work continues to be appreciated in both artistic and cultural significance.
