ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lina Condes (born 1988 in Cherkassy, Ukraine) is a contemporary American-Ukrainian sculptor celebrated for her innovative “stick-figure” sculptures that are expressive, elongated forms crafted from industrial materials yet imbued with psychological depth. Condes received her Master of Fine Arts in Interior and Furniture Design from the Kiev University of Technology and Design. Growing up in a family of scientists, her father a professor of physics and mathematics, she developed an early understanding of structure, material, and engineering, foundations that would later shape the architectural precision of her sculptural practice.
Working at the intersection of the heavy and the ethereal, Condes constructs her sculptures from stainless steel, fiberglass, wood, and stone. Despite their industrial origins, her figures convey vulnerability, tension, and emotional resonance. Her practice is deeply rooted in the lineage of the Italian Renaissance: Condes studies anatomical proportion and movement through the lens of masters like Giorgio Vasari and Leonardo da Vinci, reinterpreting their humanist concerns using contemporary technologies and materials. She approaches metal and wood with the sensitivity of traditional bronze or marble, blending the historic with the futuristic.
At the core of Condes’ work is the exploration of “mental states,” emotional and psychological conditions she visualizes through posture, gesture, and material interplay. Her elongated forms, though minimalistic, capture the complexities of modern interior life: introspection, connection, anxiety, isolation, joy, and transformation.
Condes has exhibited internationally across major art hubs in the United States and abroad, including Madrid, Istanbul, Kyiv, and Venice. Her 2017 solo project during the Venice Biennale, Extraterrestrial Odyssey, brought global attention to her work, highlighting her ability to merge conceptual sculpture with otherworldly imagination. She has been covered in prominent publications such as Forbes and Artnet, and her sculptures are held in distinguished private collections worldwide. Her work is also featured within the sculpture park at the Portland Museum.
