Biography

Born in 1991, from Raleigh, North Carolina. Works in Washington, DC. A self-taught artist, Clarence James brings his graffiti style as “Pavement 1984” (PVMT84) into vibrant canvases using acrylic, aerosol, pastel, Krink markers, and found materials. Along with inspiration from Black artists like Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Kerry James Marshall, and Mark Bradford, Clarence James takes on portraiture identity and communicates his experience in Basquiat-like hieroglyphics. In pursuit of better education, James’ parents enrolled him in a predominantly white Catholic school as a kid in which he faced the encaging grip of racism. He prevailed and went on to study at Howard University where his interest in art over his original business degree flourished. Clarence James wears his knowledge lightly as his art at first glance seems naive and playful, yet his art explores the complexity of themes in African spirituality and history to mathematics to Einstein’s theory of relativity. One particular predominant theme from the beginning of James’ career is the homage given to George Orwell’s 1984 dystopian novel. Tagging his street work under “Pavement 1984” was his form of protest against institutional control and power as he says, “freedom is a protest, self esteem is a protest.” Even as he transitioned from street art to traditional painting, Clarence James continued that energy into these multifaceted portrait heads. They are bold and defying. His work is instinctively layered with texturized color and seamless line drawings to create contemplative dimensions. An excerpt from art critic Eleanor Heartney: A cacophony of words, colors and images create pulsating surfaces that suggest a mental universe in a constant state of flux. The works have a stream of consciousness quality that encourages viewers to create their own visual pathways and associations. Images of staircases, arrows and ladders suggest upward movement and aspiration but ricochet off other motifs like diamonds or dollar signs that denote consumption and greed. Old fashioned televisions topped with rabbit ear antennae are paired with the number 84 as a reminder of how long the media has held us in its sway. Pyramids and atoms point to the vast span of human technology. Texts are often hopeful. Paintings are peppered with individual words like “love,” “free,” “future” and “climb” while phrases remind us that “we can be who we want to be” and “I can be what I want to be.” Together these motifs express the tensions we all feel between the weight of culture and society and our need for freedom, love and self-assertion. Another common motif found in James’ work is a diamond. It's about the creative trauma that makes a diamond, and that there is value in the pressure and the process. Clarence James’ work is rooted in the positivity of self-expression and consciousness of self-reflection.
