JAMES VERBICKY — Layered Mixed Media Abstractionist

James Verbicky (born 1973 in Edmonton, Canada) is a Polish-Canadian American contemporary artist known for his complex, layered multimedia works that merge painting, collage, typography, branding, and abstraction into highly structured compositions. Self-taught, Verbicky developed his signature style after relocating to Southern California, where he began working with rare vintage media sourced from international magazines, advertising archives, and cultural ephemera.

His best-known works, the Citta Series and Media Paintings, use resin, paint, and carefully arranged strips of printed material to build rhythmic grids across wood panels. These works explore the psychology of information overload, cultural memory, and the visual noise of modern media. The layered resin finish creates depth, sheen, and a hybrid quality that straddles painting and sculpture.

Verbicky’s surfaces appear simultaneously vintage and contemporary; structured yet chaotic; abstract yet loaded with cultural references. His compositions evoke everything from color field painting to pop art, while engaging with branding, typography, and collective visual memory.

Verbicky has exhibited internationally from Berlin to Boston, Los Angeles, and San Diego, including at the Louvre during the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (SNBA) exhibition in Paris. His work is held in numerous private, public, and corporate collections, including collaborations with major luxury and automotive brands. Notable private collectors include the developer of the World Trade Center, the CEO of AECOM, the Tisch family, the Frank Sinatra Estate, Dr. Phil, supermodel Lara Stone, and actors Cameron Mathison, Jon Cryer, and Jane Kaczmarek. His paintings frequently appear in high-end interiors, catalogs, and publications for collectors of contemporary mixed media.
