Art Chicago shifts toward the modern

On Thursday evening, the twelfth floor of the Merchandise Mart was so crowded, it was sometimes difficult to view what was on the walls.
Whether the hordes were drawn for the art or the party, that night marked the kickoff of Art Chicago 2011 where, for the first time, both the "traditional" Art Chicago and the contemporary-driven NEXT fairs were staged side by side. The juxtaposition offers further proof that an historically collector-driven fair is shifting direction to meet its hipper younger sib.
Though a small handful of galleries such as Penrick Collections and London's Browse & Darby are showing traditional 19th and 20th century art from the likes of Matisse and Degas, respectively, most of this year's Art Chicago exhibitors have hung works created within the last 50 years, if not the last 15. Basel, Switzerland-based LICHT FELD wows with mixed-media installations that are quite literally on fire, thanks to modern special effects, and the renown tri-city DTR Modern Galleries offers affordable works by Damien Hirst, among other modern art stars.
